presents the rich and diverse artistic expressions of Korean artists residing in France. Organized in collabora tion with the Sonamou Artists Association , this exhibition is more than a mere collection of artworks; it stands as a compelling testament to the profound dialogue between cultures, philosophies, and perspectives that en riches our understanding of both humanity and nature.
As you encounter the works of 25 remarkable artists - from the masterpieces of the pioneers to the innovative visions of mid-career and emerging talents - you will witness a unique convergence of East and West, past and present, and nature and humanity. Each piece invites deeper reflection on the evolving relationship between human beings and the natural world, offering new perspectives on these intricate dynamics.
At a time when our connection with the natural environment grows increasingly fragile, Dual Perspectives: Hu manity & Nature serves as an evocative reminder of our shared heritage and interdependence. Through the medium of art, we gain diverse and creative opportunities to transcend divisions, foster dialogue, and discover common ground. This exhibition highlights the critical importance of our common cultural heritage, resonating deeply with UNESCO’s mission to promote cultural understanding.
It is my hope that Dual Perspectives: Humanity & Nature will inspire you to reflect on, question, and engage with the profound complexities that define the connections between humanity and nature. May this exhibition not only deepen your appreciation of contemporary Korean art but also contribute to meaningful discourse on our place within the natural world.
Sang Mee BAK, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to UNESCO
In the modern world, the relationship between humans and nature is more complex and varied compared to
before. The rapid advancement of technology, growing urbanization, and worldwide environmental changes prompt us to frequently reevaluate our connection to the environment. The art show “Dual Perspectives: Hu- manity and Nature” offers a fresh perspective on this connection by showcasing Korean artists living in France, set against the backdrop of our modern era.
The experiences of the artists participating in this exhibition symbolically reflect the relationship between hu- manity and nature. Having left their cultural roots in Korea to settle in the new environment of France, they have undergone a process of redefining the relationship between self and environment. This mirrors the way modern individuals are redefining their relationship with nature in a rapidly changing world.
France has long been a center of global art, serving as a stage for diverse artistic experiments and innovations. Korean artists working in this milieu have developed a unique perspective that bridges East and West, tradition and modernity. Their works demonstrate not simply a fusion of two cultures, but the creation of a new artistic language.
The pieces showcased in this exhibition transcend the traditional categories of landscape or portraiture. They engage with complex issues of our modern society, including cultural identity, environmental change, and the coexistence of urban and natural spaces. Each work reflects the artist’s personal inner journey while also captur- ing our collective contemporary concerns.
The exhibition title, “Dual Perspectives,” encompasses multiple layers of meaning. First, it refers to the dual focus on humanity and nature. Second, it represents the intersection of Eastern and Western cultural viewpoints. Third, it spans the temporal perspectives of tradition and modernity. These varied perspectives demonstrate the intricacy of contemporary society and propose fresh opportunities for understanding.
This exhibit is meant to offer visitors a chance for profound reflection beyond just enjoying the aesthetics. How can we adapt to our swiftly changing surroundings in order to live in peace? In what way can diverse cultures and sets of values live together peacefully? How can art redefine the connection between humanity and nature?
We aim for this exhibition to be a catalyst for new perspectives and profound insights about humanity, nature, and the world. At the same time, we aim for it to be a creative reaction to the obstacles we all encounter in the present era.
